Taiwan surpasses South Korea and Japan to become the world's largest LED production base

詳細

On May 31, the latest data released by the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Industry Association showed that in 2010, in order to expand the production capacity of LED panels, Taiwan's panel companies have invested a total of US$600 million in factory construction and equipment. So far, the industrial scale of LED panels in Taiwan, China has surpassed South Korea and Japan to become the world's largest LED panel production base.

DisplaySearch data predicts that by 2012, LED backlight LCD TVs will account for 50% of all flat-panel TVs. The huge market size is the main reason for Taiwan companies to increase their investment in LED panels. In addition, the merger of several large panel companies such as Chimei and Innolux in Taiwan has rapidly expanded the overall industrial scale of these leading companies, and the huge production capacity has attracted large orders from Sony, Toshiba, and Dell. Under the premise of a significant increase in manufacturing and assembly orders, companies are bound to expand production capacity and increase investment in upstream mainstream products. Some analysts believe that the expansion of the industrial scale can ensure the yield rate of LED panels, which shows that the development of Taiwan's panel companies has entered a new stage.

Jiang Peifeng, consultant of Digital China Brand Communication Research Institute, disagrees with this view. He believes that this growth is very normal. The expansion of the industrial scale of Taiwanese enterprises is only a strategic growth, which does not mean that Taiwanese enterprises have surpassed Korean and Japanese enterprises in strength. Japanese and Korean enterprises are innovators in panel technology, while Taiwanese enterprises are famous for manufacturing. It is normal for them to invest more in plant construction and equipment than Japanese and Korean enterprises. But now the gap between Taiwanese panels and Japanese and Korean panels is that the influence of technology on brands is not as great as that of Japanese and Korean enterprises.

In addition, industry insiders also warned that Taiwanese panel enterprises are still small and diverse. Small enterprises are now facing two major problems. One is whether the yield rate can be improved. So far, the technology of major enterprises for LED panels used in small electronic devices such as mobile phones and digital media players is relatively mature, but the yield rate of LED panels used in TVs is very low. The LED industry is a technology-intensive and capital-intensive industry. Small and diverse enterprises are not only prone to repeated investment, but also difficult to form a joint force; in addition, panels have also entered the brand era. Small and medium-sized enterprises that only compete on low prices are either acquired by large enterprises or face the risk of being eliminated.
